Effective And Efficient Floor Cleaning In The New Normal

Man using a walk-behind cleaning machine on a public flooring area By Daniel Took, Head of Professional Product Marketing at Kärcher UK explains the best methods for floorcare.

The increased focus on hygiene and cleanliness brought about by the coronavirus pandemic has led to many businesses reviewing their hygiene protocols to ensure the most effective cleaning methods. With its large surface area and unavoidable visibility, the cleanliness of flooring must be a focus.

When looking to maximise floor cleaning efficiency it is important to focus on four key factors: temperature, mechanics, chemistry and organisation. Ensuring that the cleaning agent and dosage is correct is important, as is making sure enough time is allocated to soak the surface before it is cleaned with the correct brush. The use of hot or cold water should also be considered. Additionally, detergents such as active agents can be used to protect carpets or floors, prevent discolouration and bind dirt particles allowing for more effective cleaning of both the carpet and your machine.

Carpet & Upholstery Cleaners

When cleaning carpets and upholstery it is important to consider the location, type of carpet, and surface size, as well as how dirt is transferred and the available cleaning time. Efficient maintenance cleaning should easily remove mineral dirt particles, such as dust, fluff, hair or road dirt, and eliminate the need for regular intermediate or deep cleaning, thus reducing costs.

Should a deep clean be required, walk‑behind carpet cleaners, such as Kärcher’s BRC 40/22 C, are particularly effective for large, carpeted areas. These cleaners economically clean deep into the pile offering a highly effective intermediate carpet clean that can also remove stains from textiles.

For high pile carpeting (loop‑pile or velour) and heavy dirt entry, a carpet brush suction system such as the CV 38/2 is required, as the roller brush reaches the base of the pile, removing more adherent dirt particles, threads and hairs. The mechanical brush effect improves the cleaning result by around 30%, as it raises the pile, leaving carpets looking like new. Double roller systems with reverse brushes for larger surfaces (CV 66/2 and CV 60/2 RS Bp Pack) have the added advantage of shadow‑free cleaning (without zebra pattern) regardless of work direction, which is useful for velour.

Floor Scrubbers And Scrubber Dryers

Large public surfaces can be cleaned effectively with the use of scrubber dryers, which work to thoroughly remove dirt, dust and residues from hard floors in a single pass, leaving surfaces instantly clean and dry while boosting cleaning productivity.

Scrubber dryers are highly efficient in executing three cleaning steps simultaneously: applying clean water and detergent to the surface, agitating the dirt with a rotating brush or pad to lift it from the floor, and vacuuming away the dirty water to leave a spotless floor.

Available as either walk‑behind or innovative step‑on scrubber dryers, selecting the right dryer for the job is essential. Walk‑behinds are ideal for tight, cluttered spaces, corridors, entrance halls or retail environments, as they are highly manoeuvrable, quiet and easy to maintain. Step‑on scrubber dryers combine the compact manoeuvrability of walk‑behind machines with the speed and productivity of a ride‑on and excellent visibility for the operator offering comfortable, robust and powerful cleaning.

Washroom Floors

When it comes to washroom floors, high‑pressure cleaners are extremely efficient for removing surface residue but can be made more effective with the use of wet & dry vacuum cleaners. Wet & dry vacuum cleaners help to remove wastewater and residues. With an increased focus on the need for disinfecting, spray misting machines, such as the Kärcher PS 4/7 Bp, allow for large flooring surfaces to be cleaned, including inaccessible nooks. It is important to always make sure that the surface is cleaned first otherwise the disinfectant will not work as effectively.

Effective cleaning maintenance is key to health & safety and ensuring floor surfaces are cleaned to the highest standard. It is important to consider the type of flooring and the most suitable equipment needed to maintain cleanliness and hygiene in every building.
