Established in 1869, the retailer started selling fresh foods in London before expanding into packaged groceries such as tea and sugar. During the 1930s and 1940s, the company continued to refine its product offerings and maintain its leadership in terms of shop design, convenience, and cleanliness.

The retailer remains particularly strong in London and the South‑East, where it is based, and has powerful positions within many UK cities. The company acquired the Midlands‑based firm Thoroughgood in the 1930s.
