Zumtobel Group, with its lighting brands Zumtobel, Thorn, and acdc has supplied a highly efficient new lighting solution to help meet the requirements of the University of Lincoln’s most sustainable building on campus and comply with tough carbon and energy reducing measures for the new Lincoln Medical School.

Working with BAM Construction and to a brief that included energy efficiency, aesthetics, and low maintenance, Zumtobel and Thorn have created a stylish installation with maximum performance for the building’s interior spaces using Zumtobel’s MIREL luminaires mounted on TECTON trunking, ONDARIA pendant luminaires, SLOTLIGHT infinity and Thorn’s IQ Wave and Chalice LED luminaires.

The Lincoln Medical School is located on the Brayford Pool campus of the University of Lincoln and is part-funded by Greater Lincolnshire Local Enterprise Partnership (GLLEP). The £25 million facility is the University’s most sustainable building with an accompanying EPC “A” rating. The building houses various laboratories such as a category 2 science laboratory, a clinical skills suite, and an anatomy suite. It also features lecture theatres, cutting-edge diagnostic tools, and a library.

To aid medical students' learning, the clinical skills suite with mock-up consultation rooms (simulating hospital wards or a GP surgery) will give students access to the latest technologies and training methodologies so they can become the next wave of healthcare professionals. The building also provides students with a dedicated Bio-Medical and Health Sciences Library and social learning spaces. It is the most environmentally friendly building on the Brayford Pool campus and features photovoltaic panels on the roof and walls to provide zero-carbon electricity, a host of efficient hybrid heating and ventilation systems, and a living ‘green’ wall on the five-storey building. Designed to meet the BREEAM Excellent environmental standard, the photovoltaic panels have been installed to generate electricity to offset the energy used in the laboratories for example.

Zumtobel’s ONDARIA opal, circular pendants have been installed in the double height atrium of the Medical Centre’s main entrance. The diffuse and uniform light output and discreet indirect component for ceiling illumination combine to create a welcoming and atmospheric ambience. ONDARIA allows for a fully flexible arrangement of the luminaires and blends perfectly into any space without any compromise in the constant quality of light. For the lecture theatres and teaching spaces, the integration of Zumtobel’s MIREL luminaires mounted on TECTON continuous-row lighting system has opened up new options of installation. Uniform and shadow-free illumination minimises glare and active light enhances visual quality, keeping fatigue to a minimum, increasing well-being and boosting productivity. MIREL LED luminaires have an efficiency of 112 lm/W with an emphasis on high energy efficiency.

TECTON comes ready equipped to meet tomorrow’s needs, with all functions such as power supply, lighting control and connection to emergency lighting that can be seamlessly integrated into this multifunctional trunking. Luminaires can be positioned flexibly, and the system can be adapted to suit structural alterations at any time. The majority of areas within the Lincoln Medical Centre have floating acoustic ceilings so the lighting installation needed to co-ordinate between the ceilings, making TECTON the perfect solution as it provides the containment for the lighting with no additional trunking required.

Zumtobel’s SLOTLIGHT infinity has been used to provide uniform light lines in the resource centre and library reception desk.

Thorn’s IQ Wave, incorporating the company’s unique MV-Tech light optic and a highly reflective back, illuminate the circulation routes, meeting rooms and breakout spaces to create a smooth, homogenous illuminance with great lighting quality and high user comfort. Low glare (UGR 19, <3 000 CD/m2 at 65°) ensures a comfortable ambient light while high efficacy (>100Llm/W) achieves significant energy savings when compared to traditional light sources.

Thorn’s Chalice LED downlights illuminate the corridors and WC’s circulation areas, with a high efficacy of 106lm/W for low energy consumption, a low maintenance lifetime of 50.000 hours, and an ingress protection rating of IP54.

The building’s exterior complements the interior lighting solution with the use of acdc’s Plaza Bluetooth RGBW floodlights illuminating the external living green wall on the first floor roof terrace, furthermore, acdc’s Finoflex illuminates the benches.

Gary Wheelhouse, Senior Building Services Engineer at BAM Construction, comments, “In partnership with the Zumtobel Group, we were able to deliver a building with an efficient and attractive lighting scheme, offering a range of fittings to suit the differing locations and use of spaces. Even during the difficult period of the Covid 19 pandemic, they were able to safely assist with any changes and challenges on site and deliver to an agreed schedule”.

It is hoped that the new Lincoln Medical School will address future projected shortages of doctors by offering first class training that will encourage graduates to complete their junior doctor training locally and apply for jobs in the region. Professor Danny McLaughlin, Dean of medicine at Lincoln Medical School, comments, “The Lincoln Medical School will have a major positive impact on the health and well-being of the people of Lincolnshire, training over 400 students a year”.
