The AHCP (Association of Healthcare Cleaning Professionals) annual awards recognise the talent and contribution made to healthcare cleaning in the UK. Sodexo’s domestic team at Queen’s Hospital Romford (part of the Barking, Havering and Redbridge University Hospitals NHS Trust) received the Outstanding Team award.

During the second wave of the Covid-19 pandemic Queen’s Hospital was one of the busiest, with Covid-19 wards increasing up to 20 at the peak. Sodexo’s domestic team worked in partnership with the Trust’s IPC team to ensure seamless transition in status of offices and wards with the team carrying out around 300 cleaning tasks every day.

Not only did the team maintain cleaning and hygiene standards at the hospital throughout the height of the pandemic they supported other teams including the patient dining and portering teams. The team received praise for their efforts from NHS England and NHS Improvement following a visit in December 2020.

Leading the team is Moses Ayoola who was also recognised at the awards, receiving the Individual Excellence award. Moses is the business director for Sodexo leading a team of 700. Through his supportive and inclusive leadership style Moses has established a culture based on compassion, trust and integrity. Over the last year Moses has successfully led the 700-strong Sodexo team in implementing the national and Trust strategic response to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Simon Dickson, Divisional Director healthcare, Sodexo UK & Ireland said: “We are so proud of Moses and the team at Queen’s Hospital in Romford. They have worked tirelessly to support their client in its response to the Covid-19 pandemic. These awards demonstrate the fantastic, committed and dedicated people we have in our teams and are very well deserved.”

Sean Greene, Deputy Director of Estates and Facilities, Barking, Havering and Redbridge University Hospital NHS Trust said: “I have been very impressed with the level of commitment and professionalism observed by the frontline teams at Queen’s Hospital. The commitment they show to improving the patient experience is commendable. I very much look forward to moving forward as a more united partnership with joint objectives involving further enhancements for our patients and staff.”

Providing a clean and safe healthcare environment has never been more critical. Sodexo has partnered with the Infection Prevention Society (IPS) and Tork to introduce a new Environment, Cleaning and Decontamination (ECD) programme to support infection prevention practitioners tackle the spread of healthcare infections, and recently launched Protecta, an improved, evidence-based infection prevention approach for hospitals – a proposition that goes beyond simply ensuring surfaces are visibly clean.
